About this limit
This character counter shows the number of characters with spaces and without spaces, alongside words, sentences, paragraphs and lines.
Many forms and platforms limit characters rather than words. If you are writing for a specific one, pick its preset so limitpad uses that platform’s own counting rules.
How limitpad counts
limitpad counts characters the way people see them: an emoji, a flag or a letter with an accent counts as one character, even when it is stored as several code points. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation count as characters in the “with spaces” total.
Tips
- X counts some characters differently. Use the X preset for posts.
- Text messages use special rules: emoji can cut the limit from 160 to 70. Use the SMS preset.
Frequently asked questions
- Do spaces count as characters?
- Usually, yes. Most platforms count spaces. limitpad shows both totals so you can use whichever your form asks for.
- How are emoji counted?
- As one character each here. Some platforms, like X and SMS, count them as two. Their presets account for that.
